Getting Oxygen to Nejo, Ethiopia: A Patient-Centered Approach

According to the World Health Organization, pneumonia causes more child deaths than any other disease worldwide. In Ethiopia, 420 mothers die per 100,000 live births and 64 under-five children die per 1,000 live births. These are among the highest rates in Sub-Saharan Africa, and many of these deaths can be prevented with access to oxygen therapy. Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many hospitals and healthcare facilities have long struggled to secure access to medical oxygen and training on the proper use of oxygen therapy. At the Nejo Oxygen Center, an AirSep Oxygen Cylinder Refilling Plant is able to produce over 1800 cylinders of oxygen per month, which is being distributed across the western region of Ethiopia where healthcare workers are able to administer the oxygen their patients desperately need thanks to the work of Assist International.
